BBQ SAUCE OF THE WEEK: Dreamland Bar-B-Que Sauce

I've never been to Dreamland, but I've probably heard more about it than any other barbecue restaurant in the South. Someday soon, I'm going to go, and when I do, it will be to the original in Tuscaloosa. Until then, I'll have to be content to enjoy their barbecue sauce, which is justifiably well-loved.

A simple shake of the big plastic jar makes it clear that this is a vinegar-based sauce. It's thin, and by color, looks more like a hot sauce than a barbecue sauce. Instinctively, when I taste a sauce with these characteristics, I brace for the jolt - that sudden punch in the mouth that vinegar sauces so often deliver. But this sauce was much smoother than expected. The first thing you taste is the cool earthy sweetness of tomatoes - every so slightly sweet - which serves to cushion the punch of the vinegar and pepper. It's a great progression of flavors, unlike anything I've had before.

I can't wait until I can try it on some of those famous Dreamland ribs!

I is also great on white bread and chicken.

I want in on that road trip. I ordered that sauce several years back and was totally unimpressed. I'm not partial to any specific type of sauce, but that one didn't do anything for me. After reading your review, I'm seriously wondering if I got a bad jar. I guess I'll find out when we go to the original joint for ribs!

Rod,
I think that people either love or hate the Dreamland sauce. There is probably not much middle ground.

The thing I love about Dreamland (the original) is that you can only get ribs there. No menu just a whole slab or half slab. They serve untrimmed spares cooked over direct heat and basted with their sauce.

I couldn't stand it. I was out by the KC BBQ Store and I knew they had a plethora of sauces. So, I stopped in yesterday and sure enough, they have Dreamland among their 100 or so sauces. The best part about the store is that you can sample every sauce or rub they sell. So, I tried the Dreamland sauce again. It was better than I remember, but still not special. However, I can see where it would be awesome as a baste on ribs. Someday I'll get to the original Dreamland to prove my theory! Great blog post BP!

I live near the Dreamland BBQ in Roswell GA and can say that I favor their sweet sauce to the original (and the original sauce clone recipes purported on the internet). It's funny that the first time I ate at Dreamland I was so unimpressed with their original sauce that I couldn't finish my half-slab. It wasn't until I asked the waitress if they had any other sauces that she mentioned the sweet sauce. I believe it's a well kept secret. But for those who enjoy a sweet, vinegary sauce with some kick, this sauce is 1000 times better than the original, which to me was lacking depth and flavor. The sweet sauce will knock your socks off! and goes so well with the ribs. You can dunk a spare tire in the stuff and it would taste great! Definitely request the sweet sauce when your dining in or carrying out your order, you will not be disappointed - IMO!!!
